Assignment: Gerry Frank

Gerry Frank is da BOMB!  Here he is with one of his famous cakes. (Image was shot originally for 1859 Magazine so I needed to include white space for text.)

His Konditorei in Salem is a lively place, full of wonderful things to eat.  It also seems to be a warm gathering place for many wonderful characters.

This image was also blown up life size at The Bite this year.  I wish I had been in town to see it!

Feisty Girls

I love having my Canon G11 point and shoot with me at all times. I saw these girls at a friend’s backyard BBQ, and I watched them as they were trying to secretly pulling pranks on us.

Vintage Cameras: Yashica Mat 124g

Posted: June 24th, 2010 | Author: jonikabana | Filed under: Assignments, Equipment, Teaching/Workshops, Vintage | Tags: , , , , , , | No Comments »

This is the first film image I have shot in a long, long time. Martin (a participant in the recent street photography workshop in BC) is the owner of a Yashica Mat 124G that I snagged away from him to snap his quick portrait. Oh, how it felt good to feel this camera in my hands, and admire that delicate leaf shutter.

In my spare time, I love doing head shots for various professional websites.  Latest assignment was with a great communications company, called Prichard Communications. Be sure to check out Mr. Prichard’s Mac’s List for job listings!

Senior Portraits

I try not to replicate traditional poses when I photograph a teenager for their senior portrait.  Sometimes the parents love it.

Oregon Ballet Theater Assignment

I was lucky to be able to photograph all of the Oregon Ballet Theater dancers this month.  There is so much that goes into each performance, and it was an honor to be able to spend a bit of time with each dancer.  I very much look forward to this season’s performances!  Here are some samples of those images.

City Club Exhibit

Posted: March 30th, 2009 | Author: jonikabana | Filed under: Shows | Tags: , , , , , , , | No Comments »

Here is a shot of Portland’s City Club exhibit of wall size portraits from India, Madagascar and Nepal.  The exhibit was up for four months and created quite a stir!  Here is one email that I received:

Hi Joni,

This is Seanna,  from Portland State (Capstones). I just wanted to let you know that JoAnn, a Capstone faculty member and I went down to the City Cub to view your work on Monday. We were both completely blown away by the power of the photographs. It amazed us how emotional the photographs are. We both felt like we could feel the strength and pride of one of the women photographed, we smiled observing the impishness of a grin of someone in the background of another…The quality of the photos are outstanding. We both commented on the TEXTURE of the photos. The photos of the women with head coverings just “felt” like the images were super-imposed onto fabric instead of paper due to the rich texture within the photo. Really, we were just in awe!

Many thanks to Pro Photo Supply for printing the images, and to Lloyd Lemmermann for taking these interior photos.

Children’s Cancer Association Images

Posted: March 26th, 2009 | Author: jonikabana | Filed under: Non-profit Work | Tags: , , , , | No Comments »

I am continuing to create images for families who are involved with the Children’s Cancer Association.  Next up: shooting the 2009 Hero Wall, which is comprised of 25 portraits of medically fragile children.  The Hero Wall travels all around the area to various corporations (yes, you can sponsor the Hero Wall!) and then permanently resides at the CCA office.

This year’s Hero Wall will be unveiled on September 13 at Noon in front of Portland’s World Trade Center.  Many thanks to Pro Photo Supply for generously donating post processing and large format printing of the images, and to many people who assist with the shoots.
